Maltese endurance runner Zach Vella has successfully completed the first day of his six day, 360 kilometre running challenge in aid of YMCA Malta.

On Boxing Day, Vella covered the full 60 kilometres from Golden Bay to Marsaxlokk, marking the start of an ambitious fundraising effort aimed at raising €20,000 to support YMCA Malta’s work with young people and individuals facing homelessness.

The challenge comes at a crucial time, with YMCA Malta confirming that it has received 307 new referrals for shelter in 2025 alone, while all shelters are currently operating at full capacity.

Sharing an update after completing Day One, Vella thanked everyone who showed up to support and donate, saying the challenge is about real people, real stories, and the growing need for support across the island.

The run also saw strong community participation, with several people joining him along the route.

The six day challenge is designed to be inclusive, with members of the public encouraged to join for any part of the route, follow Zach’s live location, or donate towards the cause.

Vella will continue running 60 kilometres daily until 31st December, with the final day culminating in a loop around his hometown of Mġarr.
