Supreme Court President, Justice Yitzhak Amit, issued a temporary order to postpone the election for the position of Tel Aviv Chief Rabbi, at least until January 31, 2026. According to the original plan, the election was scheduled to take place on January 6. The order is based on claims detailed in a petition submitted by several Tel Aviv City Council members and council factions, through the Itim organization. The petition argues that the Minister of Religious Services promoted the rabbi election contrary to law and by canceling the obligation to consult with the city council before appointing public representatives to the electoral assembly. According to the petitioners, this move deprives the city and its residents of the ability to influence the body that elects the city’s rabbi, in a way that does not reflect Tel Aviv’s unique character.
