This is a bit wrong. I believe it was revealed recently that Canada had something like 10 operational MBTs in the entire country. And I believe they gave 2 to Ukriane
Why does Greece have so many?
I am a big supporter of European Defense….. but these numbers dont even look that good
Other than the US, the top 2 countries are Greece and Turkey, and their tanks are….
1. Pointed at each other, not Russia
2. Often kinda old. Similar to Russia, these 2 nations have large stockpiles of cold war era equipment
After those 3 countries its a pretty big drop off
This chart does not support this claim. Poor Greece having more tanks than the richest countries in Europe is embarrassing.
Tanks in country does not equal functional tanks with a stack of spare parts and the required infrastructure to keep them working.
Tanks are nice but just one part of the very complex ecosystem of war fighting, they are an expendable asset and large quantities are needed. Once You get past the USA, Turkey anad Greece you can see the numbers are pathetic.
Turkey and Greece are full of very old tanks, still useful for a lot of things but old is still old.
This isn´t a win at all.
Those numbers are suspect. The USA has about 2500 operational tanks, the rest are in storage and would need varying amounts of effort to make them operational. They are not assigned to any operational unit.
Yeah, on paper Europe looks stacked, but a lot of that “firepower” is old kit, low readiness and fragmented logistics. Maybe compare ammo stockpiles and maintenance levels next?
I’m sure the Turks hoard stuff from WW2 too. We’re a bit like the Russians that way. I suppose it’s better than nothing, but land doctrine is not based on tank armies.
This chart isn’t saying what you think it does. Not all stockpiles of ‘something’ are created equal and not all NATO countries will actually export their military in anything but token numbers to a fight far from their own borders. In some countries the numbers built up here weren’t done so to counter Russia at all.
It is also an issue of logistics. Getting Mediterranean armor to the Baltics might take weeks or months or years even assuming it could or would be done at all
Just because you have tanks doesn’t mean they are being maintained, or are even operational. It also doesn’t mean that the crews are properly trained and that the logistical support exists to keep them supplied in the field. On the bright side whatever shape they are in, they’re probably better than 90% of what the Russians have.
You either have a big army or heal your citizens when they are sick.
These tanks of greece are severely outdated Russia also has thousands of trash cans
Now do magazine depth.
Having a lot of tanks isn’t very useful in the post maneuver warfare, just look at Ukraine
Misleading stats for Turkey. Most of their tank arsenals is made up of older M60 and M48 variants from the Cold War. The only “modern” tank that Turkey has available to them right now are the Gen 3 Leopard 2s, which they have around… 350.
They are beginning the mass production of their very first “next gen” Altay variants, which they plan to produce 250 tanks… by 2030…
1. in this age tanks have highly reduced fuctionality due to drones
2. my country is listed 5th, the huge majority of our tanks are based on the very old Russian T-55 design, so totally obsolete
One problem Turkey and Greece have them to fight each other basically cancelling each other out.
Same as saying Korea has the largest army in East Asia, the only problem being its two armies that are hell-bent on destroying each other.
Using every last old, broken, and half-functional tanks are what you do when you treat your troops like disposables. Doing what Russia does shouldn’t be seen as the golden standard.
This is only estimated amount of main battle tanks wtf. But yes the statement is true regardless
MBT number aren’t a good estimate of estimate of firepower.
…….tanks. lol
Tanks haven’t changed much past few decades.. While tanks do be effective drones are making quick work of them
Actually there are more countries in europe with nuclear warheads, but i better keep my mouth shut about it.
Why bring a tank to a drone fight.
Looking at the fact that russia has lost about 10k tanks during invasion of Ukraine, this looks like a huge lack of firepower.
This is… pretty much what one would assume? The countries who have less-than-cordial relations with their neighbors have large-ish tank fleets, and the other big names each have around a division’s worth. If anything, I thought France would have more.
I wouldnt count turkey (if you did) and far more important are shells and the production.
Lot of discussion about Greece but people forget about some key facts.
1. Greece never relied on numbers. Historically it has always been about the terrain and strategy.
2. Greek army is not built for offensive wars, but it excels in defense and subversive warfare.
3. Mountains and the sea are the most reliable allies and tanks don’t play a big role there.
4. In WW2 Greece collapsed for two reasons: the opening of the second front from Yugoslavia and Bulgaria (and the refusal of Greek leadership to abandon the Albanian front), and the lack of air support (where now Greece has one of the best air forces in the world).
We’ll have enough firepower when we’ll have a literal Death Star to discourage our adversaries.
Until then, keep in mind that two significant forces in NATO- Greece and Turkey – have all that firewpower pointed at each other, not at Russia.
Shhh…
Apear week when strong and all that shit.
Yes, if we look at the numbers and the tech, Poland alone should be able to kick the Red Army’s ass if it was invaded. With the support of the Luftwaffe and the French Air Force, Europe doesn’t need the US to defend itself.
However, what Europe lacks is ammunition and the industrial capability to sustain a prolonged conflict. Some analysts say that we could only fight a high intensity war for a week or two before we run out.
Are we playing reenactments? Orcs vs Ukraine shows up how useful tanks are on today’s battlefield.
I hope Poland will have more power in the eu, they seem to understand the type of danger that threatens europe.
Put them in charge of EU military.
You know things are bad when we start having to post graphs that show its bad and claiming they actually show its good lmao
This is not a graph of firepower at all…
Interesting
This is in fact an utterly useless stat….. ya might have tanks, but how many run, shoot, have trained operators, have plenty of ammo in storage. Not to mention these stats include stuff still which was donated to Ukraine, it is actually much less!
