The State Police are seeking to prosecute three municipal police officers and one private individual in connection with the shooting of three dogs in Bauska municipality, according to a police statement on 30th December.
On October 10th this year, the police received information about three dogs being shot dead in Brunava parish, Bauska municipality. Initially, a Bauska municipal police crew and a hunter went to the scene. The State Police received the information after the incident and, in connection with it, initiated criminal proceedings for cruel treatment of an animal, resulting in its death.
One person is accused of cruel treatment of animals, resulting in their death. Such an offence is punishable by imprisonment for up to five years or short-term imprisonment, or probation, with the deprivation of the right to keep certain or all species of animals for up to five years.
Criminal proceedings have also been initiated against two persons for failure to fulfil their duties as public officials. Namely, both persons allowed this situation to occur. Such conduct is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years or short-term imprisonment, or probation, or community service, or a fine.
Another person is accused of exceeding their official powers. The person gave a verbal order, which resulted in a crime being committed. This is punishable by imprisonment for up to three years or short-term imprisonment, or probation, or community service, or a fine.
The State Police reminds that no person shall be considered guilty until their guilt in committing a criminal offence has been proven in accordance with the procedure prescribed by law.
