President Donald Trump and a slate of potential 2028 presidential contenders are all taking hits in a new poll.
An Economist/YouGov poll, released Tuesday, revealed that Trump and Vice President JD Vance, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) were all rated unfavorably over favorably by Americans as the year comes to a close.
According to the poll, Trump received a 56% unfavorable rating and a 40% favorable rating, with the margin more pronounced among party lines: while 97% of Democrats view him unfavorably and 3% favorably, 89% of Republicans rate him favorably and 9% unfavorably.
Overall, the poll found that his approval rating stands at 39%, while his disapproval rating is 56%. Trump also faces negative marks on major policy areas, including education, abortion, the environment, health care and the investigation into late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Vance — who has been positioned as the heir to the president by a handful of Republicans — fared slightly better than Trump in the poll, with 50% seeing him unfavorably and 37% favorably, according to the poll.
The vice president has not formally announced that he intends to run in 2028, but he remains the clear front-runner among other GOP figures in early polling. Vance told Fox News last month that he has “thought about what that moment might look like” after the 2026 midterm elections, noting that he will talk to Trump then about the prospect.
Newsom, who has remained toward the top of candidates among floated Democratic hopefuls, was ranked 44% unfavorable and 33% favorable among Americans, the poll found. Ocasio-Cortez, though mainly trailing behind others in her party in a hypothetical primary, was graded similarly: 43% view her unfavorably and 32% favorably.
Among other political figures rated:
Secretary of State Marco Rubio: 44% unfavorably, 29% favorablyRep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.): 51% unfavorably, 20% favorably (Republicans: 39% unfavorably, 32% favorably)Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton: 59% unfavorably, 31% favorablySen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.): 62% unfavorably, 12% favorablySen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.): 42% unfavorably, 43% favorably
The poll also asked respondents whether they approve or disapprove of how top members of Congress are handling their job in office:
Senate Majority Leader John Thune: 42% disapproval, 22% approvalSenate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: 56% disapproval, 18% approvalHouse Speaker Mike Johnson: 44 disapproval, 27% approvalHouse Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries: 45% disapproval, 23% approvalDemocrats in Congress: 59% unfavorably, 30% favorablyRepublicans in Congress: 58% unfavorably, 32% favorably
The YouGov poll, conducted Dec. 26-29, surveyed 1,550 U.S. adults. It has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percentage points.
