On this day in 1808, the 17th President of the United States, Andrew Johnson, was born in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Johnson was the only Southern senator who supported the Union, he remained in his position throughout the secession crisis and the Civil War.
He was inaugurated on April 15, 1865 following the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.
Johnson became the first President of the United States to be impeached in 1868 due to violating the Tenure of Office Act for sacking then Secretary of War, Edwin M. Stanton.
