  11. While I dont think banning these apps is a good idea, the EU really needs to regulate these toxic, manipulative apps to the full extent of the law. We cannot sustain a society when these apps are eating away the fundamental idea of a European unity

  13. No idea what the answer is. Democracy needs free speech, so control and and .monitoring feels wrong. Yet on the other hand democracy isnt coping with social media and thr ability it hands the wrong people to steer reality.

  19. This is a tough and an interesting one.

    Would we all be better off without it? Yeah, absolutely. Should we ban it? Well, we’re banning things like RT and tv channels known to spread propaganda.

    But the moment we touch TT, this will become “an attack on the freedom of speech”, and people will protest. The legality of TT became a significant talking point during the US elections, and would likely become one in Europe.

    The propaganda succeeds either way – either dont ban it and watch the world burn because of content served, or ban it and watch the world burn because you’re censoring the web.

    Honestly, as a privacy-minded person, a fan of the freedom of speech, but also someone aware of disinformation and malicious propaganda tactics driven by geopolitics to boil societies from the inside, I have to admit I’m seriously torn by the state of things.

    The only way I can think of is to regulate – not ban, but require content trend analysis and moderation. But when we try this, [the US sanctions us](https://www.cnbc.com/2025/12/24/us-bans-visas-for-ex-eu-commissioner-over-alleged-censorship.html).

    Another is to slow the bots down by verifying a real human is on the other side (e.g. “age verification”), but we also know this is super unpopular.

    I guess we’ll be stuck with the status quo for now. I can only hope we’re not just about defense, but do have our plans for offense as well.

  20. they want to break up the EU in order to more easily pressure individual nations into unfair trade deals and force regulation favorable to them. they being the US and Russia along with the billionaires/corruption they represent.

  21. Romania should ask for it as well, misinformation has gone out of control in the last 2 years, to the point where we almost got pro putin guys in power. Paid russian propaganda needs to be stopped now.

    Cant abuse peoples doomscrolling anywhere near as effectively if you rely on the user to find the content, rather than pushing content at users.

  29. The crappy ai videos are really starting to piss me off on tiktok tbh, I comment like an old man wagging his finger saying “crappy ai video” on every one of them

  31. i feel like the only way to fix the problem is to connect social media accounts with an actual ID to prevent bots. I dont like this but i dont see any other way

  32. Stupid question: this propaganda is clearly a coordinated effort by foreign countries (probably Russia). I.e. there are people behind these posts whose job it is to bombard social media with misinformation all day long. Banning social media is not something that is going to happen within a useful time-frame. Would it not be better to organize a counter-movement of people challenging the propaganda? Something akin to [NAFO](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NAFO_(group)) but countering anti-EU and nationalist rhetoric?

    The troll farms are probably comprised of a relatively small number of people who just have a huge reach because of the recommender systems (and who probably boost each other by liking/sharing/commenting each other’s posts).

    Ban permanently TikTok and and X in Europe.
    Confiscate all wealth of any person promoting Russian propaganda.

    Start showing truth in Russian media.
