  7. It sounds like maybe a botched implementation of a new security standard. But I think the tidbit about Russia building a payments system with China is interesting. While Europe builds their own payments system to decouple from US (and of course Ukraine will be part of it too), Russia couples with China…

    I doubt this will cause bank runs unless they start marking everything as fraud. It just will add a little inconvenience.

  13. I want to see Russia crumbling as much as the next man does, but the article doesn’t say they are blocking large ATM cash withdrawals. It says banks are calling customers to confirm large withdrawals, after which the money is allowed to be withdrawn. Doesn’t say anything about large cash withdrawals being blocked.

    Russia as a nation needs a severe correction and the government and leadership need to removed with prejudice and the system needs to be torn down and rebuilt to pave the way so that society and culture can heal (easy for me to state, but it will take a dedicated legion of reformers to enable this without leading to.more authoritarian leadership).

    That said, I feel bad for the suffering that is to come.

    Not for those complicit, but a lot of children and otherwise uninvolved people are going to suffer horribly. 

  20. This is the point where the banks start stealing directly from the people. They go bust, and these people never see their money again.

    In the UK a bank went bust. And the money? Well frankly it evaporated and a lot of people will NEVER see their money again.
