Finland has recorded its coldest temperatures of the winter so far, as the cold intensified across large parts of the country on Wednesday morning.

According to the Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI), the lowest reading was measured shortly after 8:00am on Thursday in the village centre of Kilpisjärvi, in Enontekiö, where temperatures fell to minus 38.4 degrees Celsius.

Severe cold was recorded widely across northern Finland. In Muonio, temperatures dropped to minus 37.5 degrees, while much of Lapland experienced lows under minus 30 degrees.

Freezing conditions were also felt further south. In eastern Finland, temperatures in the Kuopio area fell to around minus 20 degrees, while similar readings were recorded at Helsinki Airport.

In southwestern Finland, Turku saw overnight lows of between minus 16 and minus 17 degrees.

The Finnish Meteorological Institute said the cold spell strengthened during the morning hours, setting a new winter low for the current season.
