
June 23, 2025- Lewiston, NY, Governor Kathy Hochul directed the New York Power Authority (NYPA) to develop and construct a zero-emission advanced nuclear power plant in Upstate New York to support a reliable and affordable electric grid, while providing the necessary zero-emission electricity to achieve a clean energy economy. Several North Country counties are on the state’s shortlist of communities willing to host a new nuclear power plant.Â
On Tuesday the New York Power Authority (NYPA) put out a list of 25 companies and 8 communities which have expressed ‘strong interest’ in New York’s first nuclear power plant in decades.
Governor Kathy Hochul committed to building a 1-gigawatt plant last March.Â
Jefferson, St. Lawrence, and Oswego counties are on the list of prospective host communities, as well as Wayne, Schuyler and Broome counties, and the cities of Rochester and Dunkirk.Â
Local assemblyman Scott Gray, of Watertown, has been active in pushing for the involvement of Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. He hosted several informational meetings last year.Â
