In a post on X on Wednesday, Tusk drew a direct historical parallel, writing that critics were trying to “destroy Jerzy Owsiak and the Orchestra, just as they once tried to destroy Lech Wałęsa and genuine Polish Solidarity”.
The politician was referring to the communist-era campaign against the Solidarity movement, led by Wałęsa in the 1980s, which ultimately played a key role in ending communist rule in Poland.
By invoking the comparison, Tusk portrayed the criticism as part of a broader pattern of political hostility from anti-EU conservatives and far-right groups, rather than a neutral debate about the charity.
“Surely you won’t allow this?” he added, appealing directly to the public.
Chcą zniszczyć Jerzego Owsiaka i Orkiestrę, tak jak próbowali zniszczyć Lecha Wałęsę i prawdziwą polską solidarność. Chyba na to nie pozwolicie?❤️🇵🇱

The Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity is one of Poland’s most prominent philanthropic initiatives, raising funds each year for the public healthcare system through nationwide street collections, concerts and large-scale public events.
Since its founding in the early 1990s, it has become a widely recognised symbol of civic engagement in post-communist Poland.
At the same time, the charity and its outspoken founder have long faced opposition from parts of the political right, particularly groups critical of its liberal values, pro-European outlook and high public profile.
This year’s Grand Finale is scheduled for Sunday, 25 January 2026. The fundraising campaign will focus on improving the diagnosis and treatment of digestive diseases in children.
Volunteers will be collecting donations through 88 local offices in 25 countries outside Poland.
