Highland Council has received no notification that asylum seekers are due to arrive at Cameron Barracks in Inverness this month, according to a spokesperson.

The plans by the Home Office have seen a wave of criticism, particularly over a lack of information on the proposals.

A special meeting of the full council has decided that another letter should be sent from the cross-party leadership.

But the council has also confirmed that an earlier letter has not yet been responded to, with a timeline produced by the local authority illustrating the communication issues.

A council spokesperson said: “Highland Council has had no response to letters sent to the Home Office and no confirmation about if and when asylum seekers will arrive at Cameron Barracks.”

Asylum seekers had originally been expected to arrive in the city in December, but this was delayed due to work needing to be done on the barracks to make them fit for purpose.

There has been no update from the Home Office since then.

It has also habitually refused to answer any questions put to it by The Inverness Courier and holds a page of FAQs on its website.
