North Korea says its leader, Kim Jong-un, has recently overseen test flights of hypersonic missiles. As the country stated, these flights were intended to enhance its military capabilities and nuclear deterrent.

The tests were announced just as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung was leaving for China to meet President Xi Jinping. They also came a day after neighbouring countries reported that North Korea had fired several ballistic missiles.

What North Korea Says About the Tests

North Korea’s state news agency reported that the drills helped check the readiness of its hypersonic weapons and improve the skills of the missile troops. Kim Jong‑un said the country must keep upgrading its offensive weapon systems to protect itself, according to KCNA Watch.

In recent weeks, Pyongyang has also test‑fired what it described as long‑range cruise missiles and new anti‑aircraft weapons. The government released photos that appear to show progress on building a nuclear‑powered submarine as well.

Why the Tests Matter

Observers say North Korea is showing off its weapons progress ahead of the ruling Workers’ Party congress. This is a major political event taking place for the first time in five years.

Experts also note that the tests came shortly after a U.S. military operation that removed Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro and brought him to the United States on narco‑terrorism charges. North Korea strongly criticised the U.S. action, describing it as hostile.

Overall, many analysts believe that such U.S. moves make Kim more determined to expand North Korea’s nuclear weapons capability, which he sees as essential for keeping his government and country safe from what he calls U.S. hostility.
