Two people have been charged after the death of a critically injured newborn baby in Auckland.

The 10-week-old boy was taken to Pukekohe Maternity Hospital on January 2 in a critical condition, where staff alerted police, Detective Inspector Karen Bright said.

He was transferred to Starship Hospital, where it was established he had suffered “non-survivable injuries”.

A homicide investigation was launched after the child died of his injuries on Wednesday, January 7.

A 27-year-old woman and a 23-year-old man would next appear in the Manukau District Court in May, jointly charged with ill treatment/neglect of a child.

“Suppression orders are in place regarding the identity of the child and the parties charged,” Bright said.

The investigation was ongoing and further charges were being considered.
