Vice Chancellor and SPÖ leader Andreas Babler has emphasised the need for Europe to recognise its own significance on the global stage. He posits that imposing sanctions on major technology companies could be an effective strategy, particularly given the existing ties between these corporations and the Trump administration. His objective is to deter the United States from pursuing the annexation of Greenland by threatening stringent sanctions and punitive tariffs.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, Babler called for the formulation and adoption of a detailed list of measures at the European Union level. He stated, “The EU is home to a single market comprising 450 million individuals, along with considerable economic power that can be leveraged in our dealings with the United States.” He underscored the importance of sending a clear, unified message to the Trump administration, reinforcing the collective support of all EU member states for Denmark’s sovereignty and advocating an end to any notions of annexation.
Babler also highlighted the necessity for the EU to be adequately prepared to respond to developments without engaging in lengthy internal discussions in times of crisis. He believes that sanctions against technology enterprises should be an integral component of this approach, given their relationships with the US government. Furthermore, he proposed imposing restrictions on US investments in critical infrastructure sectors as part of the deterrent measures.
“I adhere to one principle: strength is demonstrated when boundaries are respected,” Babler remarked. He concluded by stating, “We have observed that strength is the only language that can effectively deter the Trump administration. Europe must embrace its position with confidence and recognise the many options available to us.”
