JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) – Thieves have burglarized Last Call Sports Grill, stealing items from the fire-damaged property nearly a month after the building caught fire.
Solar cameras captured the burglars ransacking what remained on the charred property.
The thieves loaded furniture, electrical equipment, and boxes onto a pickup truck before driving away.
“This is not like a quick in and out thing. They are spending a good hour there to load stuff up. That’s pretty ballsy and pretty scary too,” said Rahul Chaddha, owner of Last Call Sports Grill.
Chaddha said this was not the first theft at the property.
“These guys are professionals. They are targeting the stuff that has value. They are going on top of the burned building, and they are not even scared. The whole building can collapse,” he said.
The business caught fire in December. The Jackson Fire Department is still investigating the cause.
Chaddha, who is speaking publicly for the first time since his business of 21 years burned down, described the experience as overwhelming.
“It’s a lot of insurance stuff and it’s overwhelming. Right now, to be honest, confusion is the right word. It’s very confusing, in disbelief. It’s a roller coaster. The emotions are high. You are in grief one day and you see all this crazy stuff, and you get angry,” he said.
Capitol Police are investigating the thefts. Chaddha said he hopes the surveillance video will help identify the suspects.
“Capitol Police are on it. I believe they should have some leads on it sooner or later and hopefully, with your guys, someone should notice this truck out there and we can catch them,” he said.
To prevent further theft, Chaddha said he hired a company to board up the property completely.
Chaddha said he does not know when Last Call will reopen.
“I wish I knew, man; that’s all I can say. We are looking at multiple options. I think in the next month or two, insurance is going to clear out some things, and we will have some clarity on some financial decision. Skeptically, anywhere from nine months to a year,” he said.
Anyone with information about the crime is urged to call Capitol Police or Crime Stoppers.
