The International Organization for Migration (IOM) says that return does not necessarily mean immediate reintegration, noting that only 11 percent of returning Afghan migrants have secured employment.

In its latest report released on Sunday, January 10, the organization said that one in four returnees has been unable to settle in the location they had intended.

According to the report, more than half of returnees lack essential documentation.

The report adds that 25 percent of returnees have not been able to resettle in their original districts.

It further notes that 56 percent of heads of returning households have been unable to meet their basic needs.

Based on the findings, 35 percent of heads of returning households and 36 percent of single returnees have been unable to find work.

This comes as the Taliban say that 1.8 million migrants returned to Afghanistan in 2025.

The Taliban have also claimed that the process of distributing land to returnees has begun.
