The best thing that could happen for peace and stability in the Middle East is regime change in Iran. It’s still too early to tell if the latest outbreak of nationwide protests will topple the fundamentalist mullahs who have been in charge since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. Or will the regime’s well-honed authoritarian crackdown reassert control after 16 days of unrest?

There is always risk and uncertainty about what comes next when a power vacuum emerges in the world’s most volatile region. Yet it’s difficult to imagine something worse emerging than the hardline theocracy that has sought to develop nuclear weapons while dragging Iran back into the Middle Ages, especially by restricting the human rights of Iranian women and girls.
