The West appears to have woken up late to the demonstrations spreading across Tehran and beyond. More than two weeks ago, at the outset of the protest movement, U.S. President Donald Trump warned the ayatollahs not to shoot at protesters. In Israel, the developments and their potential implications were covered extensively. Yet only on Sunday did the UN Secretary-General speak out publicly, and many protesters – both in the Iranian diaspora and inside Iran – are accusing the international community of turning a blind eye to indiscriminate massacres.
