Netherlands – Crematorium in Enschede tests first hydrogen cremation

A crematorium in Enschede is currently testing cremations using green hydrogen. This is the first time in the Netherlands that hydrogen is being tested as a viable and sustainable alternative to natural gas for cremation furnaces. If all goes well, the first hydrogen-powered cremation is expected by the end of this year.

Crematoria Twente is modifying one of its existing ovens and conducting tests with it. According to the crematorium, the method’s effectiveness is already beyond doubt. “The cremation process works well, we know that from experiments in England. It’s more about the effects on the equipment,” director Harriët Tomassen told RTV Oost .

The crematorium tests the reliability, safety and measures the environmental impact and receives a European subsidy for this.

Decide for yourself

The center in Enschede won’t just cremate bodies using the new method.

Tomassen, says:

Once it turns out everything is going well, we will, of course, inform people.

”Then they can take it into account and decide for themselves whether they want to be cremated sustainably,”

In the Netherlands, approximately 100,000 people are cremated annually . This is usually done using natural gas furnaces that emit CO2. If a furnace is heated with green hydrogen, it is CO2-neutral.

‘Green’ death

In recent years, there has been increasing attention to more sustainable options after death. For example, resomation will likely become possible in the Netherlands soon. Resomation involves dissolving a person’s body in a warm liquid after death.
