PIL picks yards for new LNG-powered containership order

  • 2026-01-14

In November 2025, LNG Prime was the first to report that PIL was looking to expand its fleet of LNG dual-fuel ships with an order for vessels with a capacity of approximately 13,000 teu.

Sources said on Wednesday that PIL selected China’s Hudong-Zhonghua and South Korea’s Hyundai Heavy Industries to each build four LNG dual-fuel container vessels.

The vessels will likely feature type B LNG tanks.

Also, the Hudong-Zhonghua ships are expected to feature WinGD X-DF engines, while the Hyundai Heavy vessels are expected to be equipped with Everllence ME-GI engines.

No pricing details or delivery dates have been revealed.

However, based on prior orders, PIL should begin receiving deliveries of these vessels in 2028.

PIL building LNG-powered fleet

Sources said that the Hudong-Zhonghua vessels will be similar to the five 13,000-teu LNG dual-fuel vessels PIL ordered from the Chinese shipbuilder in 2024.

These vessels feature 12,000-cbm B-type LNG fuel tanks developed by Hudong-Zhonghua and will join PIL’s fleet progressively from end-2026.

Moreover, each is worth approximately $190 million.

This means PIL’s new order for eight LNG dual-fuel vessels could be valued at approximately $1.52 billion.

PIL also has five 9,000-teu LNG dual-fuel container ships on order at Hudong-Zhonghua.

Hudong-Zhonghua will deliver these vessels in 2027 and 2028.

In total, PIL has ordered 18 LNG dual-fuel vessels since 2022.

These orders include four vessels booked at China’s Jiangnan and four vessels at China’s Yangzijiang Shipbuilding.
