Iker Romero is still searching for his first win as head coach of the Austrian national team. Austria opened their Men’s EHF EURO 2026 campaign in Herning with defeats against Germany and Spain, yet they still have a slim chance of reaching the main round at the first major tournament under the successor to Aleš Pajović.

The former Spain star took over the national team in the summer of 2025, but has not tasted victory in six friendly and competitive matches so far.

Austria have been beaten by Hungary, Czechia, France, Slovenia, Germany and Spain.

Their next opponent is Serbia, and if other results go their way, a win could still send Austria into the tournament’s top 12 and the main round.
