Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA) – Nuclear Science Committee Bureau reflects on achievements and future directions

The Bureau of the NEA Nuclear Science Committee (NSC) convened on 14-16 January 2026 at the NEA office in Paris, France. Under the chairmanship of Daniel Mathers (United Kingdom), newly appointed as NSC Chair, and with the participation of its new member, Valérie Vandenberghe (France), the Bureau reviewed progress across the Committee’s ongoing activities, discussed implementation of the NSC Programme of Work, and examined recent developments within separately funded projects. 

Particular attention was given to activities related to the nuclear fuel cycle, education and training, artificial intelligence (AI), and the reform of NSC data management projects. Participants also discussed the prioritisation of NSC activities in preparation for the next biennium. The Bureau expressed support to the new NEA joint project – AI Platform for Research and Education (AIxpertise) – scheduled for launch in early 2026. The Bureau emphasised the role of hands-on activities in the AIxpertise proposed programme of work to develop and enhance AI expertise in the nuclear sector.
