Rabat – Morocco international Sofyan Amrabat will undergo surgery on his right ankle in the Netherlands later this week, after months of discomfort that conservative treatment failed to resolve.

The injury dates back to a collision with Isco earlier in the season, an incident that continued to affect the midfielder despite repeated efforts to manage the issue without surgical intervention.

The decision came after consultations that involved all parties concerned: Real Betis, the Moroccan national team, Fenerbahçe, and the player himself.

An agreement took shape several days ago, with surgery now viewed as the most viable option. Amrabat remains on loan at Betis from the Turkish club until the end of the current campaign.

The timing of the operation follows the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Amrabat did not take part in the final, but he remained close to the group and was seen offering support to Betis teammate Abde Ezzalzouli.

Questions around Amrabat’s fitness surfaced early in the competition. He featured in Morocco’s opening two matches, but physical discomfort soon limited his role, and he spent the remainder of the tournament on the bench.

Within the Betis camp, concern grew as the issue showed no clear signs of improvement.

The choice to opt for surgery now opens a decisive phase in the player’s recovery. A clearer return date will emerge once rehabilitation begins in Seville.

At the club, caution shaped every step of the process. Head coach Manuel Pellegrini had already alluded to the midfielder’s ongoing physical difficulties in recent press appearances, and it was no secret that Amrabat lacked full fitness during Morocco’s most decisive moments at the continental tournament.
