Power was shut off for thousands of customers and multiple homes were evacuated after a propane leak was reported on Larch Street in Halifax on Thursday night.
The Halifax Regional Fire and Emergency Service said a report came in at 7:29 p.m. AT Thursday.
Assistant Chief Jim Stymiest told CBC News the tank is connected to a 12-unit building at 1676 Larch Street and that it weighs about 454 kilograms.
He said the area from Jubilee Road south to Jennings Street between Oxford west to Larch has been evacuated.
Stymiest said multiple HAZMAT crews are at the scene along with Nova Scotia Power staff and Irving Oil representatives.
He said Halifax Transit has deployed two comfort buses for displaced residents.
Police were also seen in the area blocking off streets. Stymiest said people should stay away from the area for now.
At 9 p.m. AT, Nova Scotia Power’s outage map showed more than 9,700 customers were without electricity. The map indicated the power was outage was “requested by local authorities.” It estimated power would be restored by 10:15 p.m.
