Denmark stayed alive in the tournament with a win over France in the final game of yesterday’s schedule. After the defeat to Portugal at the end of the preliminary round, it became clear that if Gidsel and company want to fight for medals — and the one trophy this generation still lacks — they have to win every match from here on out.
In the end, they managed to break France’s resistance, and one of the key figures was Barcelona goalkeeper Emil Nielsen:
“Playing against France is always exciting — they’re one of the best teams in the world. In the end, we showed our class. Ten minutes from the end we were two goals down, but this atmosphere, playing in BOXEN, gives us an extra 10%. The crowd was a pretty important factor in tonight’s win. Of course there was pressure — we didn’t allow ourselves to slip into a routine mode. We have to win, we have to win everything — that’s the goal. That’s what we’re aiming for,” Nielsen made clear.
