Intense rainfall swept across Cyprus today, causing widespread disruption and prompting an elevated response from emergency services. Flooded roadways, waterlogged buildings, and fallen trees were reported in multiple districts, with firefighting units placed on heightened readiness.
According to information released by Cyprus Fire Service spokesperson Andreas Kettis, crews handled a total of 18 weather-related incidents nationwide as the storm moved through the island.
Where crews were deployed
Nicosia District
10 incidents attended across areas including Engomi, Lakatamia, Aglantzia, Geri, Tseri, Astromeritis and Evrychou
Operations focused on:
Clearing blocked storm drains (1 case)
Pumping floodwater from residential basements (7 cases)
Removing or securing uprooted trees (2 cases)
Seven specialized flood-response teams were activated, operating from locations such as Paphos Gate, Kaimakli, Acropolis and Agios Peristeronas
Larnaca District
5 incidents recorded in Larnaca, Ormideia and Zygi
Tasks included:
Opening stormwater drainage points (1)
Pumping water from flooded basements (3)
Dealing with fallen trees (1)
Three flood-response crews were deployed, including units covering Oroklini and Vasiliko
Famagusta District
3 incidents handled in Agia Napa and Paralimni
All cases involved water removal from basement areas
Two flood-response teams were sent to the affected locations
Fire Service officials noted that, where necessary, municipal crews and other local authority teams assisted with the response, helping to manage the immediate impact of the severe weather as conditions gradually stabilized.
