Eva Marija’s ‘Mother Nature’ has won this year’s Luxembourg Song Contest and will represent the Grand Duchy at the 70th Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna.

Marija beat seven other acts in the national contest, which was organised by RTL and held at the Rockhal on Saturday evening.

The Eurovision website said that in the second and final round of voting “‘Mother Nature’ triumphed with a total of 222 points, winning by a huge margin over the 136 scored by the song in second place, ‘Sweet Tooth,” performed by Steve Castile.

Both an international jury and the viewing public cast votes.

According to a profile released at the time of the selection of the eight Luxembourg finalists in October, Marija is currently pursuing a multifaceted course at the Conservatoire music school in the Grand Duchy’s capital, training in violin, singing, piano, and bass guitar. Her musical range spans jazz, classical, and pop/rock.

Her entry, ‘Mother Nature’, was described on the Rockhal’s website as “a nostalgic and hopeful song about reconnecting with childhood and nature, created with Swedish and Danish collaborators.”

The eight artists were selected out of a pool of 83 applicants, which was narrowed down to a shortlist of 15 performers in a national audition held last autumn that yielded the eight.

A total of 35 countries are currently scheduled to compete in the two semi-finals. Marija will perform ‘Mother Nature’ during the first half of the second semi-final in the Austrian capital on 14 May, aiming for a place in the Eurovision final round which will be held on 16 May.

Five countries – the Netherlands, Slovenia, Ireland, Iceland and Spain – have withdrawn from this year’s contest in protest at the involvement of Israel.
