SUNNYVALE — Authorities were evacuating residences and a school was sheltering in place Monday morning due to a natural gas line leak that started after a vehicle collided with a house.
The leak was located in the area of 700 Winstead Court, according to an alert from the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety.
The collision was reported to Sunnyvale DPS around 9:21 a.m., said Captain Dzanh Le.
Authorities notified PG&E and were waiting for crews to respond to the gas leak, Le said. There was not an estimated time of when the leak would be repaired.
The Challenger School, which serves students from preschool to eighth grade on nearby Hollenbeck Avenue, was asked to shelter-in-place while the leak was being repaired, Le added. Students will not be allowed to go outside but the school will otherwise be able to continue with its daily activities.
Le did not have information about how many homes were being evacuated.
“Homes in the nearby area are being evacuated as a precaution and the school is being asked to shelter in place as a precaution,” Le said.
The collision caused minor injuries and no one was transported to the hospital, he added.
Authorities asked people to avoid the area.
