After three consecutive days of closure, the University of Kentucky will be open and fully operational Thursday, Jan. 29.

According to a campus-wide email, UK’s facilities teams, grounds and maintenance crews and UK Police have worked throughout the closure to clear campus roads, sidewalks, parking lots and building entrances.

”Their dedication ensures we can continue our critical missions of education, research, service and patient care safely,” the email said.

The university is returning to a normal schedule after canceling in-person classes due to a winter storm that brought significant snowfall, ice and freezing temperatures, according to previous Kentucky Kernel reporting.

According to UKNow, the last time UK closed for more than one day in a row was in 2015, also due to a winter storm.

The email said cold temperatures will continue to be a challenge throughout the week, and asked supervisors and instructors to offer flexibility with attendance for employees and students as neighborhoods and side streets continue to be cleared.

”We are encouraging our community to take a few extra precautions this week,” the email said, listing winter safety tips like limiting time outside and dressing in warm clothing and insulated layers.

Students who need assistance with cold-weather gear can be connected to resources by filling out an online form, and those who notice uncleared or slippery walkways can email [email protected].
