Arabic version: الدنمارك مستعدة لتخريب مدارج غرينلاند ضد غزو الولايات المتحدة
According to BBC News,
Denmark’s military was reportedly ready to blow up key runways in Greenland if the United States had attempted an invasion, according to Danish public broadcaster DR. This alarming revelation comes surrounding US interest in the Arctic island, which is a semi-autonomous part of Denmark.
In January, Danish soldiers were deployed to Greenland for joint military exercises known as Operation Arctic Endurance. Sources within the Danish government and military indicated that blood supplies were also transported to the island to treat potential casualties in the event of conflict. The Danish defense ministry declined to comment on the report, which was corroborated by two European officials.
The situation escalated following a US military operation in Venezuela, which heightened fears in Denmark regarding President Donald Trump’s intentions towards Greenland. Trump has previously expressed interest in annexing the island, a claim that has been met with firm rejection from both Greenland’s leadership and the Danish government.
According to DR, a decision was made to prepare for a possible US invasion, including plans to sabotage airstrips in Nuuk and Kangerlussuaq. A Danish military source noted that the goal was to raise the cost for the US, implying that the US would need to carry out a hostile act to gain control over Greenland. While there were preparations for resistance, it was acknowledged that Danish forces would likely struggle to repel a US attack.
In response to the escalating rhetoric, Trump stated at the World Economic Forum in Davos that he did not want to use force regarding Greenland, emphasizing the need for negotiations to resolve the issue. This complex situation reveals the intricate dynamics between the US and its NATO allies in the context of Arctic geopolitics.
