Director Ric Roman Waugh’s first Greenland film in 2020 delivered a refreshing spin on the end-of-the-world disaster genre by focusing on the human element of one family’s plight to make it to an emergency shelter on the title island. The sequel, however, is a more formulaic tale of survival in a post-apocalyptic world.
Picking up five years after the events of the first film, in which Earth was devastated by impacts from fragments of a massive comet, Migration begins by showing the routine of life in the underground Greenland bunker. John Garrity (Gerard Butler) has become an engineer for the community who scouts the outside world for supplies. His wife, Allison, has become one of the community’s leaders, while their son, Nathan (Roman Griffin Davis) attends a makeshift school.
Survivors of the initial comet strike are under constant threat by unexpected radiation storms and earthquakes, while remnants of the original comet have formed a ring around the planet that constantly rains down debris onto the surface.
As the survivors of the Greenland bunker debate how to contend with dwindling resources and requests for assistance, they theorize that the crater from the major comet strike in central Europe at the end of the first movie is now the center of a thriving ecosystem that is somehow protected by the instability impacting the rest of the planet.
As they discuss the potential dangers of attempting to migrate there, the bunker is threatened by a massive tidal wave, forcing an evacuation. The Garritys are among the few survivors who are able to escape in a salvaged boat, and make their way toward the crater, contending with warring factions and other obstacles.
Waugh in the bonus materials contends the two films’ exploration of humanity’s capacity for both cooperation and cruelty make it a relevant metaphor for the COVID pandemic and its aftermath. Thus, as Migration progresses toward its predictable conclusion, it tries to convey a message of optimism to drown out what could otherwise be considered a depressing continuation of the first film’s storylines.
The home entertainment presentation of Greenland 2 includes four behind-the-scenes featurettes that run under a half-hour in total. The eight-minute “Rebuilding: Ric Roman Waugh” delves into the director’s perspective of making both films, while the 10-minute “Pushing Forward: Gerard Butler,” the seven-minute “Heart and Soul: Morena Baccarin” and the three-minute “What We Leave Behind: Roman Griffin Davis” center on the film’s three primary stars discussing their experience with the franchise.
