Prague. The Czech Republic has qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 20 years after defeating Denmark in a penalty shootout. In a thrilling play-off final held in Prague, the Czech Republic secured their World Cup ticket by capitalizing on Denmark’s poor penalty performance.
The match went to a penalty shootout after ending in a 2–2 draw following regulation and extra time. Denmark’s players delivered a lackluster performance during the shootout.
Striker Rasmus Hojlund, currently on loan at Napoli from Manchester United, saw his shot hit the crossbar and go wide. For Denmark, only Christian Eriksen managed to score from the penalty spot, while two other attempts missed the target.
For the Czech Republic, Tomas Chory, Tomas Soucek, and Michal Sadilek scored their penalties. Ladislav Krejci missed his attempt. Earlier, the Czech Republic took the lead in the third minute through a goal by Pavel Sulc. However, in the second half, Denmark’s Joachim Andersen equalized.
Although the Czech Republic regained the lead in extra time, Kasper Hogh scored a header for Denmark in the 111th minute, forcing the game into penalties. Denmark’s players appeared nervous during the shootout, allowing the Czech Republic to emerge victorious.
The Czech Republic last participated in the World Cup in 2006. With this victory, they have ended a two-decade wait. On the other hand, Denmark has been eliminated from the World Cup for the first time since 2014.
