The owner of Malta’s largest retail network has launched a foundation in memory of his late wife to provide “tangible support to society”.

The Sandra Calleja Foundation will be led by President Emeritus Marie Louise Coleiro Preca and supported by a Board of Administrators.

Calleja died from a brain tumour at the age of 36 in 2009, less than three weeks after her husband Ivan Calleja opened his first Convenience Shop outlet.

The retail chain now operates over 100 active outlets in 50 localities across Malta and Gozo and last October it rebranded as MyConvenience and MySupermarket.

The newly formed foundation, which was launched during the Prime Minister’s visit to the company’s head office in Qormi, will back initiatives related to education, healthcare, environmental sustainability and community development.

Robert Abela said the foundation reflects the company’s values of empathy and solidarity.

“As a Government, we are always there to support such initiatives. Corporate Social Responsibility is a hallmark of Maltese entrepreneurs, who continue to share their success with others,” Abela said.
