The Iceland on Springfield Road in Chelmsford has stood on the site for many years, and its closure has impacted the local area. Chelmsford locals have said that they are ‘gutted’ after Iceland confirmed that its Chelmsford store will be shutting at the end of the month.

The Iceland store on Springfield Road has been confirmed to be closing for good on April 25. The Chelmsford branch of the Food Warehouse, a sister supermarket chain run by Iceland and located at Riverside Retail Park, will remain open. This will be the nearest location for customers after the Springfield Road supermarket closes.

The closure has been met with mixed reactions from locals. Some locals have said that it is ‘so sad’ that the store is closing, whether others say the closure ‘isn’t a surprise’.

No matter how you feel, thousands of people drive past the Iceland every day, and it will be interesting to see what happens to the site. Most people in the area feel sad about the closure.

Carol Brett said in the EssexLive comment section: “That’s sad, I always shopped there.” Gary Draper said: “Gutted”, while Lorna Pardy added: “What a shame”.

Not everyone agreed, though. Robert Stuart-Evans commented: “We still have the Food Warehouse, let’s not forget that”. Louise Jacqueline said that closure isn’t a surprise. She said: “There’s never anyone in there and it’s expensive. I’m not surprised”.

A spokesperson from Iceland said: “We can confirm that the Iceland Foods store on Springfield Road in Chelmsford will be permanently closing on the 25th April 2026.

“The closest store is The Food Warehouse store located at Riverside Retail Park, Essex and we look forward to continuing to serve our local customers.”
