Sheetz has reduced its energy consumption by 20% across its more than 830 locations, the convenience-store chain shared ahead of Earth Day on Wednesday. 

In 2019, Sheetz was the first c-store chain to join the U.S. Department of Energy’s Better Buildings Challenge, a voluntary initiative in which participating organizations commit to reducing energy consumption by 20% over 10 years. 

“For nearly 75 years, our company has been committed to making a positive impact in the communities we serve,” said Sheetz Senior Manager of EV and Energy Programs Eric McCrum. “By joining this challenge, we aimed not only to inspire other retailers to adopt more sustainable business practices, but also to hold ourselves accountable for meaningful results. Achieving this goal reflects our ongoing commitment to becoming a more environmentally responsible organization by building stores that reduce our overall energy usage.”

Sheetz is No. 13 on CSP’s 2026 Top 40 update to the 2025 Top 202 ranking of U.S. c-store chains by store count. Watch for the full 2026 Top 202 ranking in June.

The challenge includes nearly 300 organizations across nine key market sectors and 24 Fortune 100 companies, including Citi, Intel Corp., Nike and Walgreens, Sheetz said. Since 2011, the initiative has driven $24.2 billion in cost savings, resulted in 25 billion gallons of water being conserved and diverted 4.4 million tons of waste from landfills, the company said.

Sheetz gave several examples of how it is working to reduce the environmental impact of its locations, including:

Sustainable store designs: Since 2011, new Sheetz stores have been built with LED lighting and low-flow water fixtures. Older stores have also been upgraded with LED lighting, variable frequency drives and high-efficiency HVAC systems to cut energy consumption. Recycling and waste diversion: Sheetz’s corporate locations and more than 95% of its stores recycle corrugated cardboard, with expanded recycling for plastics, metals, glass and paper across 381 Sheetz stores where services are available. Electric vehicle (EV) charging:Sheetz offers EV charging across more than 130 locations. Alternative fuels: Sheetz offers E85, a blend of 85% ethanol and 15% gasoline. E85 allows vehicles to run with a reduced dependence on fossil fuels, Sheetz said. It also was an early adopter of E15 gasoline, which burns more cleanly than traditional E10, it said. Sheetz offers both fuel options at more than 450 locations. 

Sheetz will be recognized for its achievement during the Better Buildings and Better Plants Summit in May. 

Altoona, Pennsylvania-based Sheetz has more than 830 convenience stores across Pennsylvania, Maryland, Michigan, North Carolina, Ohio, Virginia and West Virginia. It’s planning to enter Indiana in 2027.
