RED WING, Minn. (KTTC) – The Red Wing Fire Department responded to a crude corn oil spill from a barge on the Mississippi River at approximately 12:09 p.m. on Monday.
According to the fire department, the spill happened near the ADM riverfront facility. Authorities confirmed ADM staff placed a containment boom around the barge to prevent material from drifting downstream. The city of Red Wing said an estimate of 3,000 to 3,500 gallons of crude corn oil may have entered the river.
Fire crews placed additional booms downstream to capture material and supported the Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office with river traffic control. The local Community Awareness and Emergency Response group also responded to assist with containment and cleanup.
The fire department said the scene has been turned over to ADM and Clean Harbors for continued response and mitigation. It said there is no immediate risk to the public. The Minnesota State Duty Officer, Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, and Goodhue County Emergency Management were notified.
