Zack Polanski has congratulated Zoe Garbett after she became the first directly-elected mayor for the Green Party.

Speaking in Hackney after Ms Garbett won the mayoralty in the London borough, Mr Polanski said: “It is time for change and this is an historic moment, because the Green Party just won its first-ever directly-elected mayor, the new mayor of Hackney.

“Too many people across this country and Hackney are suffering right now with a toxic combination of high bills and low wages.

“People feel like they’re running all the time just to keep up and that’s why it’s so important that we have mayors and directly-elected representatives like Zoe in the halls of power making the change, because I know how she will work tirelessly every single day to make Hackney a place that everyone affords to live in.”

he newly-elected Green Party mayor for Hackney has vowed she will “change the system”.

Speaking after she ousted Labour, which has held the mayoralty since the directly-elected position was created in 2002, Zoe Garbett said: “Today we start a fightback.

“In this election, over and over, people kept telling me that they felt let down. People kept saying, ‘it’s hard for me and it’s hard for us’. Council services are failing those who need them most and people are struggling to make ends meet.

“To everyone who voted for me, I truly thank you for putting your trust in me today.”

She added: “I’m going to change the system. That’s why you’ve elected me, to lead the fightback here in Hackney, this campaign has never just been about the Green Party.

“Countless people, movements, organisations, parties and communities have come together to make this change possible.”
