CLEVELAND, Ohio (WOIO) – The 1st Ohio Light Artillery, Battery A and the Capitol Square Review & Advisory Board shared their plans Friday to bring a cannon from the Civil War to the commissioning of the USS Cleveland.
Cannon No. 179 will make the trip from the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus to Cleveland for the May 16 commissioning, where it will salute the combat ship.
The cannon fired a salute at the funeral for President Lincoln in Cleveland in April 1865, the Statehouse said in a press release.
The Civil War reenactment artillery unit hopes that by bringing the cannon they will be able to educate Ohioans about Ohioans’ part in the war’s history.
According to the Statehouse’s release, fellow reenactors plan to join the cannon at the ship’s commissioning, including reenactors from Valley View.
