A German tourist has won more than 900 euros in damages after his family failed to secure sun loungers during their summer holiday on the Greek island of Kos.

According to the Hanover Court’s ruling, the man had booked an 11-day holiday at a 384-room hotel, paying around 7,186 euros for the stay with his wife and two children.

He claimed that the sun loungers by the pool were occupied from 6am, as other holidaymakers reserved them with towels, despite a ban imposed by the hotel.

The tourist said he had reported the problem to the tour operator and hotel staff, but the situation was not resolved throughout their holiday. The family only managed to secure sun loungers once, while their children were forced to sit on the ground on towels.

The court ruled in favor of the tourist, finding that the holiday had not met the conditions promised by the tour operator. For this reason, the family was awarded additional compensation of 986.70 euros.

According to German law, a trip is considered defective when the services provided do not match those promised during the booking.

The court emphasized that the hotel was not obliged to provide a sun lounger for every guest, but there should have been a reasonable number in relation to the hotel’s capacity.
