Slovenia has started preparing its new National Energy and Climate Plan (NEPN) for 2030-
2040 and is inviting the public and experts to take part in a consultation on long-term scenarios that will form the basis of future energy and climate policy.
The NEPN is Slovenia’s main strategic document for energy and climate policy over a ten-year period, aligned with long-term climate goals.
Member States must submit a draft updated NEPN to the European Commission by 1 January 2028 and adopt the final version by 1 January 2029. The first step is preparing analytical groundwork, including long-term scenarios for different pathways towards climate neutrality.
These scenarios are based on two key commitments: the European Union’s target of a 90 per cent net emissions reduction by 2040 compared to 1990 levels, and Slovenia’s national commitment to achieve climate neutrality by 2045. The period to 2040 is crucial, as it will shape long-lived investment decisions in energy, infrastructure, buildings, industry and transport.
