TEXAS — Texas companies and importers are anxiously awaiting tariff refunds to roll in.

San Antonio-based customs broker Carlos Pereda has been helping them apply for the refunds since the window opened in April.

Currently, only certain shipments are eligible for refunds, but they are expected to bring in some much-needed cash.

“The smallest [clients] have been receiving around $5,000 for one import, and that’s a pretty big amount for a small client,” Pereda said. “The larger clients, they’re all the way up to the hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

It’s all adding up to the $133 billion the federal government has to give back. In a court filing Tuesday, Customs and Border Protection said it is currently processing $35.5 billion in refunds. Nationwide, 86,000 applications have received approval so far.
