Three people were killed and several others injured late Saturday after a driver struck a parked car, went onto a sidewalk and hit a group of people outside a store in East Oakland, authorities said.

The crash happened just before 11:15 p.m. near 85th Avenue and International Boulevard, the Oakland Fire Department said.

Authorities said the suspected driver, a juvenile, had been moving recklessly before hitting the parked car and then the pedestrians. After the crash, the juvenile tried to walk or run away from the scene, but witnesses stopped and detained him until Oakland police arrived, according to fire officials.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, fire officials said. Three others were taken to local hospitals, including two in critical condition and one in serious condition.

The suspected driver was among two additional people who suffered minor injuries, according to the Fire Department.

A large Oakland police and fire presence remained at the scene late Saturday, and authorities urged people to avoid the area.

The Oakland Police Department did not immediately provide additional details, including the identities of those killed, the ages of the victims, or what led up to the crash.

Oakland’s traffic fatality dashboard showed six traffic deaths from January through April, including three pedestrians, before any update from Saturday night’s crash.

The crash follows another recent mass-injury pedestrian collision in Oakland. On May 2, seven people were injured after a driver struck pedestrians in the city’s uptown neighborhood, according to police.
