Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth played pretend ship captain on Friday, joining Navy personnel aboard the USS Boxer in Singapore ahead of the IISS Asia Security Summit.
After doing some morning exercises with the crew, Hegseth delivered what he clearly hoped to be a rousing speech about the war with Iran.
“So right now, Iran has a choice: Meet at the table with the president and give up their nuclear program, and as the president said two days ago now in the Cabinet meeting … ‘Iran can either do it the right way with a deal across the table, or they can deal with my guy on the left.’ That happened to be me,” Hegseth said. “But it’s not me, it’s you guys.”
With troops dead, gas prices at record highs, and the Trump administration desperately trying to get a deal that poorly resembles former President Barack Obama Iran deal, Hegseth’s speech sounded more like a cat kicking around an empty tuna can.
But of course, Hegseth’s media team then attempted to polish his uncomfortable appearance with slow-motion shots, heavy filters, and dramatic music—lots of dramatic music.
A sad, little movie won’t make things more affordable.
