INDIANAPOLIS (WNDU) – Indiana Gov. Mike Braun participated in a ceremonial signing Tuesday for a new immigration enforcement law during an event at the Statehouse.
The Fairness Act, which Braun signed in March, strengthens Indiana’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities, requiring local agencies to honor ICE detainer requests and prohibiting sanctuary policies across the state.
The law also targets employers who knowingly hire people not authorized to work in the U.S., while expanding the state attorney general’s authority to investigate violations.
The law takes effect July 1.

State officials said the measure is aimed at improving public safety and ensuring uniform enforcement of immigration laws in Indiana.
When asked about the law in March, Braun said he fully supports immigrants coming to the country legally.
“I think it has to do with a lot of what you’ve seen around the country in a sense that where do you stand on the issue of illegal immigration? And are states going to be cooperating or are they going to be resisting? And it’s pretty clear in our state that citizens aren’t interested in being a sanctuary state,” Braun said.
