The National Mall celebration that once promised Vanilla Ice, Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, the Commodores, Morris Day and the Time and other throwback acts has apparently been reduced to President Donald Trump’s preferred headliner: President Donald Trump.

After days of artists fleeing Freedom 250’s planned concert series, Trump said Thursday, June 4, that the troubled semiquincentennial event would be replaced by what he called “the Greatest Rally, EVER,” featuring himself, Lee Greenwood, tenor Christopher Macchio and military ensembles.

The decision marked a public unraveling of a concert plan that had already become one of the stranger spectacles of the nation’s 250th birthday planning.

Several performers had withdrawn after saying they were led to believe the event would be nonpartisan.

Trump, in announcing the replacement rally, insulted the departed acts on their way out.

“We don’t want singers with no talent, but big fees to put you to sleep, we’ve told them all to stay home,” Trump wrote in a social media post announcing the June 24 rally in Washington, D.C.

Trump said Greenwood, whose “God Bless the U.S.A.” has long been a fixture at his rallies, would introduce him. He also said Macchio would perform “Nessun Dorma,” “Hallelujah,” “Ave Maria” and “God Bless America,”

The event is expected to feature the U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” the Armed Forces Choir, the U.S. Marine Band and the Joint Armed Forces Chorus.

The Freedom 250 site describes the Great American State Fair as a June 25-July 10 exposition stretching from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument, with pavilions representing states and territories, performances, exhibits and fair attractions.

But the entertainment lineup began collapsing almost as soon as it was announced.

Among the acts promoted for Freedom 250 also included Flo Rida, Young MC, Fab Morvan of Milli Vanilli and others, who were all swept into the public fallout as artists and representatives distanced themselves from the event or raised questions about how it had been presented.

Vanilla Ice, whose real name is Robert Van Winkle, remained one of the few public holdouts before Trump’s latest announcement.

He told CBS News earlier this week that he saw the event as “the birthday of America” and said he would perform for anyone.

“Putin. Whoever. You want — I’d go to Iran. Don’t matter,” he said. “You can’t pick your fans. They pick you. You’re just an entertainer. Don’t ever try to think you’re anything beyond that.”

The shift from concert to rally also gives Trump direct control over a celebration that had become a political and logistical headache.

In earlier posts, Trump had floated canceling the concerts and replacing them with an “America is Back” rally, arguing he would draw a larger crowd than the musicians.

Thursday’s message was more definitive. Trump described the revised program as “A Rally to end all Rallies.”
