Intelligence assessments point to unconventional tactics that could blur the line between provocation and open conflict. Officials fear calculated moves designed to test unity without triggering full-scale retaliation.
The United States has warned its allies about the possibility of provocative actions by Russia against Poland, a NATO member country. According to the American assessment, such steps may be aimed at testing the Alliance’s readiness to respond to threats, as well as undermining international support for Ukraine.
This includes potential strikes on Poland’s critical infrastructure using missiles or drones, as well as the risk of military units entering the country’s territory. Sources close to Polish President Karol Nawrocki note that Washington has repeatedly signaled such scenarios to Warsaw.
According to Polish interlocutors, the implementation of such plans cannot be ruled out in the coming months. The main goal is to create tension that could influence the position of Western countries regarding further support for Ukraine.
Possible scenarios of provocations
Among the possible options are drone attacks on energy facilities or simulated airstrikes that would force Poland to activate its air defense systems. A scenario involving limited incursions by small military groups across NATO’s eastern border is also being considered.
Some intelligence sources do not rule out the use of hybrid methods in border areas.

Another scenario under discussion involves an incident in which Russian or Belarusian troops might cross the border, explaining it as a technical malfunction or emergency situation. In such a case, Moscow could insist on diplomatic negotiations while avoiding direct military confrontation.
Polish sources suggest that the Kremlin may be counting on restraint from NATO allies, who might prefer a political settlement instead of an immediate military response.
NATO’s response and threat assessment
In Polish government circles, the risk of such a provocation is considered real. Information about possible Russian actions is also confirmed by diplomats and representatives of the defense sector.

Analysts point out that due to its heavy involvement in the war against Ukraine, Russia is currently limited in resources for a large-scale conflict with NATO. For this reason, targeted or hybrid operations are considered more likely.
Potential directions for provocations include the Kaliningrad region and the territory of Belarus. At the same time, attempts to shift responsibility for incidents onto Ukraine cannot be ruled out, in order to create additional tension among allies.
In response to potential risks, NATO is demonstrating readiness to defend its eastern flank. In particular, military exercises involving the United States in the Baltic region are intended to emphasize that any attack on allies will be treated as an attack on the entire Alliance.
Poland is also strengthening its own defense capabilities by conducting deterrence exercises and signaling readiness to respond firmly in the event of aggression.
Despite existing political and economic differences between Poland and Ukraine, Warsaw remains an important partner for Kyiv. At the same time, there is a risk that Russia may attempt to exploit these disagreements to destabilize the situation in the region.
Overall, according to Western sources, potential provocations may be part of a broader Kremlin strategy aimed at weakening NATO unity and reducing support for Ukraine without escalating into an open military conflict.
