“Through staged pavement rehabilitation and targeted holding treatments, the Project will deliver a durable, long‑life roading solution that aligns with available funding while minimising disruption to patients, staff, and visitors.”
The Gisborne Herald asked Health NZ how much funding had been allocated for the project and where the funding would come from.
Jonathan Ellison, Health NZ regional director of infrastructure, said details relating to project funding, budgets, and commercial arrangements were commercially sensitive because the project was in the procurement and tender phase.
He said the project “will improve the condition, safety and reliability of key roads across the hospital campus, including critical access routes for patients, visitors, staff, and emergency services”.
The condition of the roading network at Gisborne Hospital has been an issue for years, with one resident in 2024 describing the potholes and uneven surfaces as “disgusting”.
At the time, repair funding came from the hospital’s operational infrastructure budget.
