Wait, what? BTS just found yet another inventive way to build excitement around their music. Ahead of the release of the music video for NORMAL, one of the standout tracks from their fifth studio album ARIRANG, the group launched a tongue-in-cheek teaser campaign that quickly went viral online.
The music video, along with the Korean version of NORMAL, will premiere exclusively on Spotify on July 17 (ET) before arriving on all streaming platforms on July 19 (ET).
NORMAL explores the contrast between life under the spotlight and moments of quiet introspection – themes that have long been central to BTS’ music. The song blends heavy kick-and-snare beats with psychedelic guitar textures, while the members reflect on everyday emotions through conversational sing-rap. Produced by Ryan Tedder, the track leans on understated production to let its introspective lyrics take centre stage.
The rollout for the song has been as talked about as the music itself. On July 13 and 14, advertisements resembling sensational tabloid headlines appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle and the New York Post, catching fans completely off guard.
Headlined, “BTS Seen in Bathroom Amid Mysterious Late-Night Gathering,” the ads featured what appeared to be all seven members dressed in black suits, standing with their backs to the camera in front of a row of toilets. The accompanying copy playfully questioned whether the gathering was “entirely normal,” mimicking the tone of a celebrity scandal.
What initially looked like an outrageous tabloid story soon turned out to be a clever promotional campaign for NORMAL. Fans quickly connected the dots, flooding social media with theories, memes and praise for BTS’ unconventional marketing strategy, which rapidly amplified anticipation for the release.
The campaign arrives as BTS continue the record-breaking European leg of their BTS World Tour: ARIRANG, with sold-out stadium concerts and strong commercial momentum behind the album. Released earlier this year, ARIRANG debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200, while its lead single SWIM also opened atop the Billboard Hot 100.
With the upcoming release of the NORMAL music video and its Korean version, BTS is continuing the global rollout of ARIRANG, a project that has further cemented the group’s dominance in 2026.
