LISBON, Maine —

A man is facing charges after police say he stole a van in Richmond and later drove away from police before trying to run from them on foot in Lisbon.

Lisbon Police Chief Ryan McGee says his agency was notified by the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office at about 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday that a gray 2015 Dodge Caravan had been stolen from the parking lot at the Dollar Tree in Richmond and that it appeared to be headed toward Lisbon.

A short time later, McGee says Lisbon officers spotted the vehicle stopped in traffic. When police tried to stop and speak with the driver, police say the driver kept going. Due to the amount of traffic at the time and the potential risk to other drivers, officers did not chase the vehicle.

McGee says police later found the stolen van on Fillion Street in Lisbon where witnesses told them the driver had run away.

Police searched the area and found the driver on Town and Country Drive where they were able to arrest him.

The man, identified as Ryan Birkbeck, 28, will be charged by Lisbon Police with failing to stop for a police officer and driving to endanger. He was turned over to the custody of the Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office and taken to Two Bridges Regional Jail. He was expected to face additional charges from other agencies.
